Pulsed electromagnetic therapy is an alternative way to treat chronic pain, inflammation and swelling. Though several studies say that PEMF therapy can be used for numerous neurological problems like cerebral palsy , migraine and even depression. Though there are some beliefs like anti-aging and beautifying skin and many others issues can be solved with this therapy.
In 2006, FDA approved PEMF therapy though there are some disadvantages of PEMF therapy like -
PEMF therapy helps to increase blood flow or circulation in our body. So this therapy is advised for people who have poor blood flow but it is important to note that an increase in blood flow may persist for some time even after the therapy is withdrawn and it can cause negative effects like oxidative stress.
All though PEMF therapy doesn't cause internal bleeding, stomach problems, or any kind of painkiller addiction like other treatments. But due to improved traffic to the nerve cells, some patients can feel increasing temporary pain.
PEMF therapy generally makes the body cells use a lot of nutrients so it can cause nutritional deficiency.
Decreasing blood pressure is one of the serious side effects of PEMF therapy. Reduction in heart rate is also a side effect and it can be deadly for any person who has any problem in the cardiovascular system.
Once PEMF therapy is started then a significant drop in blood sugar level can be followed so it is important to take precautions for those people who have a challenge in regulating their blood sugar.
Though there are some little effects more like dizziness, sleep disturbances, increased urination, etc but these all side effects can be followed only for 5% of people who are treated by this therapy.
So it is not recommended to use PEMF therapy for people who have blood sugar or pressure problems, people who have cardiovascular problems or who use pacemakers, pregnant women etc.
